Project Background
The mile 10 Langat Treatment Plant draws its raw water from the upper reaches of Sg. Langat. Flow in the river was regulated by the Langat impounding reservoir. Due to the prolonged drought in 1997, the storage in the Langat impounding reservoir was drastically draw down. Plant production was reduced as much as 50% of its normal output, causing great difficulties and inconveniences to the affected supply areas in Cheras, Ampang Ulu and parts of Kuala Lumpur.

In order to augment the yield in Sg. Langat, it was proposed to transfer 70 Mld (15 Mgd) raw water from the Semenyih impounding reservoir to Sg. Gemi, a tributary of Sg. Langat. The yield of Sg. Semenyih at the Semenyih Intake had been increased by 70 Mld (15 Mgd) under the Phase 1 of the project i.e. Projek Memindahkan Air Dari Tasik Ke Sungai Semenyih.

Due to the satisfactory performance in implementing the Phase 1 project, Premier Ayer-Asia Baru Consortium was again selected to undertake the project on turnkey basis.

The works proposed by the Consortium include : -

a) 1000mm dia. siphon pipes connecting the intake to the dam with vacuum pump and priming system.

b) Intake and pump station at Semenyih dam.

c) 4 nos. 23 Mld. pump sets (3 duty & 1 stand-by), associated M&E equipment and telemetry and supervisory control system.

d) 3.8 km of 1000mm dia. conveyance pipeline from the proposed intake to discharge point at Sg. Gemi, a tributary of Sg. Langat.

e) 11 nos. energy dissipation chambers with orifice plate.

Project Methodology
In view of the urgency of the work which need to be completed and commissioned within six (6) months, the projects was awarded on turnkey-basis. Co-ordination and kick-off meetings were held between the Client, Turnkey Contractor, Consultant and M&E Sub-Contractor at the beginning of the project to clarify and highlight the project requirement. The construction experience of the contractor, site constraints, requirements by equipment Sub-Contractor were taken into consideration in the design and detailing by the Consultant. Construction drawings were issued in batches in parallel with the progress of physical works at the site. The Consultant's Resident Engineer was authorized to decide on construction details and make amendment/revision to the drawings at site. Frequent site meeting were held between the RE, Contractor and Sub-Contractors to ensure work programme was strictly adhered to achieve the target completion date.

After six (6) months of hard works, close coordination and co-operation between all parties concerned, the work finally completed and raw water was able to be pumped from Semenyih Dam to Sg.Gemi i.e a tributary of Sg.Langat.

Another mission accomplished by Asia Baru Construction Sdn. Bhd. to the satisfaction of the client and our little contribution toward alleviating the water shortage in Klang Valley area.
