PROJECTS > Proposed Bertam DAF Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant, Durian Tunggal, Melaka

Project Background
Package 1 - Construction and Completion of Intake Tower and Raw Water Pumping Station at Durian Tunggal Dam and 1200mm Diameter Raw Water Pipeline from Durian Tunggal Dam to Bertam DAF Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant

Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) called an open tender for Construction and Completion of Intake Tower and Raw Water Pumping Station at Durian Tunggal Dam and 1200mm Diameter Raw Water Pipeline from Durian Tunggal Dam to Bertam DAF Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant. Asia Baru Construction Sdn Bhd was successful in its bid and was awarded the Contract. The works under this Contract, when completed, will supply raw water to the Proposed Bertam DAF Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant.

Briefly, the scope of works under the Contract comprised the following major components:

- Intake tower and siphon vacuum pump house at the existing Durian Tunggal Dam.
- Raw water pump station at Durian Tunggal Dam site.
- Twin 1200mm diameter stainless steel siphon pipeworks from the existing Durian Tunggal Dam to vacuum pump house.
- 2000mm diameter mild steel pipeworks/manifold from vacuum pump house to the proposed raw water pump station.
- 1200mm diameter mild steel raw water pumping main from the proposed raw water pump station to Bertam DAF Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant, approximately 5.0km long.
- Supply, installation, testing and commissioning of vacuum pumpset, raw water pump sets (4 nos. @ 2,625m3/hr), all associated M&E, instrumentation and control systems.
- All associated ancillary works.

Project Methodology
Almost all of the works under the Contract were to be carried out within the compound of the existing Durian Tunggal Dam Site and along the existing pipeline reserve of SAMB. Therefore, closed liaison with SAMB was necessary in order not to damage any existing services within the SAMB reserve or cause interruption to the operation of the existing water supply facilities.

The main challenge of the works was the construction of twin 1200mm diameter stainless steel siphon pipeworks at the existing Durian Tunggal Dam, more than 30m from the shoreline and submerged 12m deep below the dam water surface. A temporary staging was constructed from the edge of existing dam with about 5m width extending 40m into the existing dam. This temporary staging forms the access into the works areas for erection of bore-pile, laying of twin stainless steel siphon pipelines, launching of inverted siphon pipeworks with screen and roller gates, construction of RC intake tower etc, all right at the “middle” of the existing Durian Tunggal Dam. To achieve the invert level of the inverted siphon pipeworks, under-water excavation was carried out using dredge bucket.

All the temporary woks were designed and endorsed by Professional Engineer and all installation works were supervised by experienced engineers and supervisors. The levels and vertically of the inverted siphon pipeworks were checked and confirmed by M&E counterpart, to ensure proper performance of siphon pump system.

Construction of the proposed raw water pump station was rather conventional and completed as scheduled for installation of pumpsets and other M&E equipment by M&E work team.

The 5.0km long 1200mm diameter pumping main was laid within the existing SAMB pipeline reserve which was mainly not accessible by heavy vehicle. Hauling of pipes thus required additional effort and involved more machineries. However, the experienced pipelaying team still able to complete the works well in advance.

Although all the works were completed before the Date of Completion. However, testing and commissioning of the pumping system was unable to carry out. This was due to delay in the construction of Bertam DAF 2 Water Treatment Plant (WTP) undertaken by other contractor. The Contract was thus extended until the WTP ready to receive raw water from our pumping system.
