In the mid nineties due to the rapid expansion of the economy, Malaysia was experiencing a great shortage of electricity. This prompted the government to encourage the setting up of Independent Power Producers (IPP) to augment the production capacity of Tenaga Nasional, the sole supplier of electricity in Peninsular Malaysia. In responding to the government call, Genting Sanyen Power Sdn. Bhd. was one of the IPPs given the licence to generate 720 MW of electricity. Due to the urgency of the project, Genting Sanyen Power Sdn. Bhd. had decided to carry out the project on a fast-track basis. Amongst other power generating equipment and facilities, a water treatment plant was required to supply treated water to the power plant. Asia Baru Construction Sdn. Bhd. in association with Syarikat Ismail Ibrahim were appointed as the Civil and Building Contractor for the Water Treatment Plant in Kuala Langat, Selangor. The scope of work comprised the following:-
  1. River intake upgrading works.
  2. Grit removal chamber.
  3. Raw water pipeline.
  4. Cascade Aerator.
  5. Flocculation tank and distribution channel.
  6. Sedimendation tanks and settled water channel.
  7. Filters and filter gallery.
  8. Chemical and control building.
  9. Pumping station.
  10. 3.4 MG treated water reservoir.
  11. 100,000 gal. back-wash tank.
  12. Pipeworks and piperack.
  13. Sludge holding tank.
